Why you should Use a Travel Agent for your next Trip
When we started planning our trip to Mexico, we had absolutely no idea what to expect. Many of our friends & family had great experiences there, but booking an all-inclusive resort was a bit out of our comfort zone. Google searches turned up hundreds of resorts that all appeared the same – same location, same amenities, same beautiful beaches. But how can you tell which resorts are actually good, which ones have old pictures posted and which resorts might land you with food poisoning? It was overwhelming. Cue the travel agent. A friend told us about her recent trip to Mexico and how she used a travel agent to book her trip. It had to be expensive right? WRONG. Turns out it didn’t cost us a penny extra.
How does using a Travel Agent Work?
Initial Meeting:
After hearing about Vic of VicsVacations, we DM’ed her on Instagram and set up a time to virtually meet. She was an expert and super thorough in making sure she knew exactly what we wanted. Did we prefer the beach or pool? Did we want relaxing or a party vibe? What was our budget and were we flexible on dates and departures? We spent about 20-30 minutes just getting to know each other, and then she got to work finding the perfect place for us. A few days later, Vic sent us a YouTube video where she talked through various dates, flights and resort options. We were able to give feedback on what we liked and what we wanted to change and set to booking things pretty quickly.
Leading up to our Trip:
After booking our long weekend to Secrets Akumal in Riviera Maya, MX, Vic did a great job on checking in with us leading up to our departure. She was willing to answer any and all of our questions and made a lot of effort to make sure everything was as smooth as possible for us. Here were some of our favorite parts about working with Vic:
- With COVID still looming, Vic told us what we needed in terms of COVID tests and paperwork to enter and exit Mexico easily
- She sent over all sorts of resources specific to an all-inclusive resort – like a guide to tipping and a video explaining how to transport safely to and from the resort
- A week before our trip, Vic sent us a folder in the mail with our travel docs, FAQs and gift cards to Starbucks the morning of our trip – which was such a sweet touch!
What are the Perks of working with a Travel Agent?
Wow, there are so many.
1) We got to work with an expert who knew exactly what the resorts were like and had tons of past experiences to make sure we got exactly what we were looking for (and more)!
2) We were able to get better deals through bundling that we couldn’t have gotten on our own
3) Did we mention no extra cost?! Vic gets a travel agent commission that’s included in the flight and hotel prices, so her services were absolutely free to us
4) The best part was that all of the research and stressful parts of planning were handled for us. One leg of our flight got rescheduled and Vic sent us a message that same day with alternate plans so we didn’t lose out on vacation time
Tip: One thing we’d do next time when using a travel agent is evaluate the total cost of the flights more closely. While Spirit initially looked like the cheapest option, after over $100 in bag fees, it’s likely we could’ve booked a nicer airline at about the same cost. So just remember to calculate all of those hidden fees to get a true comparison!
After talking with other vacationers in Mexico, we know we made the right call using a travel agent for this trip. We got to experience an all-inclusive with less stress at the same price as everyone else there, and that’s a win in itself.
Thanks Vic for making our first trip to Mexico so great!

Love this review! I am using an agent for my upcoming honeymoon to an all-inclusive in Punta Cana. So far – very simar experience! I had no idea how to pick a place, so having an expert with first-hand experience is a game changer.
